UK: 46,000 Vehicles Destroyed in 2007 Due to Unpaid Road Taxes

Believe it or not, but UK authorities crushed 46,126 vehicles from a total of 129,000 car that where clamped last year as part of a crackdown on people not paying their road tax. According to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, which collects road taxes, that’s a 34 percent increase from 2006 when 34,369 vehicles where pulverized.

The cost to release a car that has been clamped is £80 ($157) while if you want to rescue your vehicle from impoundment, you’ll have to pay double that (£160). Offenders also face prosecution with fines of up to £1,000. Car that have been clamped are towed away and impounded. If no one claims the vehicles, authorities can crush them after a period of seven
