A sudden and sharp 64% decrease in March 2016 U.S. sales of the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class serves as a prelude to its rebirth as, drum roll, the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class.

The GL's year-over-year loss of 1507 sales in March was nevertheless cancelled out in Mercedes-Benz's U.S. showrooms by a doubling of GLC/GLK sales, the GLE/M-Class's 18% uptick, a 15% increase in GLA sales, and the G-Class's nine-unit uptick, shown below. Overall, Mercedes-Benz's five-pronged utility vehicle lineup jumped 17% to 13,013 units, a gain of 1889 sales. Mercedes-Benz's cars fell 19%, a 3646-unit March loss.

Meanwhile at Cadillac, where car volume took a 4% dive as the CT6 arrived, the Escalade and its extended ESV sibling jumped 17% to 3238 units, more than the Infiniti QX80 and Land Rover Range Rover combined; more than the Lexus LX570, Lincoln Navigator, both big Benzes, and the Toyota Land Cruiser combined.

20% of the Cadillacs sold in the United States in March 2015 were Escalades. That figure rose to 25% in March 2016.
