Small SUV Sales In Canada - March 2016 YTD

In March 2016, the Honda CR-V was Canada's best-selling utility vehicle and thus the top-selling small SUV/crossover, to boot. With a narrow margin of victory over the year-to-date-leading Toyota RAV4, the CR-V did little to eat into the RAV4's first-quarter lead.

Toyota RAV4 sales are up 17% so far this year, a hugely healthy gain in a segment that grew 11% during the first-quarter of 2016.

The Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, and Jeep Cherokee are other top sellers which produced growth at an above-average pace in the first-quarter of 2016. The Dodge Journey and Ford Escape are the major competitors to post declining sales in 2016. For the Escape, the first-quarter 2% loss occurred after 2015's 9% drop and 2014's record Escape sales output. 

Canada's perennial best seller, the Escape currently trails the RAV4 by 1384 units through the first three months of 2016. 

Canadian sales of the Volkswagen Tiguan predictably declined 7% in the first-quarter of 2016. Not only is the Tiguan, though never offered with a diesel engine in North America, tainted by its Volkswagen branding, it's also an ancient design that's about to be replaced by a model already revealed.

Even the declining, ageing, tainted Tiguan was still more popular in March than most candidates in the smaller, more affordable subcompact crossover. (Only the surging Chevrolet Trax and still-fresh Mazda CX-3 topped the Tiguan's 841-unit March mark.) Subcompact utility vehicle sales volume is exploding in Canada as Canadian sales of conventional subcompact cars plunge. But as a group, they are not challenging for top-selling status... yet. Together, the RAV4 and CR-V outsold the whole subcompact category by nearly 2500 units in March.
