Canadian new vehicle sales growth slowed in July 2016, but this was still the best first-seven-months ever for the auto industry in Canada.

July volume slid nearly 3%, a loss of 4500 sales due largely to an 11% drop in passenger car sales. Canada's top-selling car, for instance, the Honda Civic, lost 16% of its July volume.

Pickup trucks continued at a healthier-than-average pace, however, because of the strength of Canada's top-selling vehicle line, the Ford F-Series, and expanding midsize pickup truck sales. Honda's new Ridgeline is only just becoming available at dealers across Canada.

SUVs and crossovers posted a 4% increase in July, as well, a gain of nearly 2400 sales for a sector that outsold passenger cars by 50,000 units in the first seven months of 2016. 

Canadian sales of the Toyota RAV4, the top seller so far this year, jumped 38% in July. The Honda CR-V, July's top-selling utility vehicle reported best-ever July sales both in Canada and the United States.

Canadians registered 1,165,227 vehicles in the first seven months of 2016, an increase of more than 53,000 sales compared with the same period in 2015. For 2016 to not end up as another record year for the Canadian auto industry, sales would need to fall 7% over the remaining five months of the year. Unlikely.

Sales data for brands such as Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Rolls-Royce are unfortunately not broken down by model. ANDC estimates say sales for those brands in 2016's first seven months were 48, 126, 100, and 49 units, respectively. It is believed that Tesla sold 962 new vehicles during the first six months of 2016.
