Canada Auto Sales Brand Rankings - August 2016 YTD

A rapid start to 2016 for the Canadian auto industry followed up a record-setting performance for the new vehicle market in calendar year 2015 but was followed up with slowing sales in early summer. July volume slid 3% after first-half sales jumped 6%.

For August to redeem the poor results from the prior month, the best-selling automakers in Canada would need to perform. One did. Two others did not.

 Sales at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, 2015's top-selling automaker, and General Motors, the second-ranked automaker in August, tumbled 9% and 20%, respectively. 

 Ford Canada's 9% year-over-year expansion counteracts some of the devolution at Ford's top rivals, but there were signs of a slowdown elsewhere, as well.

 As a result, Canadian auto sales declined 2% in August 2016, a drop of 3500 sales for an industry which lost 4500 sales in July.

With record F-Series sales, Ford was Canada's top-selling brand. The Honda Civic was Canada's top-selling car; the Ford Escape led all SUVs and crossovers. Smart and Jaguar were Canada's fastest-growing auto brands; Subaru was the fastest-growing volume brand. Maserati, Alfa Romeo, and Fiat sales tumbled fastest, but Chrysler's 46% decline was worst among volume brands.
