Canadian sales of full-size volume brand cars continued to dry up in August 2016, falling 7% to barely more than 1000 units.

Even with a 39% year-over-year increase, the segment-leading Chevrolet Impala produced fewer than 300 sales. Year-to-date, segment-wide sales total barely more than 14,000 units. At the current rate, only 21,000 of these cars will be sold in 2016. 

Chevrolet sold 21,486 Impalas in 2006. 

Yes, that was a different car in a different corner of the large car market in a different era for GM.

But more than anything, focus in on that word "era." Times have changed, and this group of nine cars now accounts for only 3% of the overall Canadian passenger car market; only 1% of the new vehicle market overall. 

Eight different individual car nameplates, from the Honda Civic to the Volkswagen Golf, have outsold this entire segment so far this year.

For Canadian purposes - Hyundai USA doesn't yet breakdown sales figures for the sedan and much less costly coupe - the Genesis will now be shown with both these volume brands, with which Hyundai is a direct competitor, and midsize luxury cars, with which the Genesis competes.
