Canadian sales of full-size, volume brand sedans tumbled 32% in September 2016, a year-over-year decline caused by every nameplate in the category.

From the Ford Taurus's modest 3% downturn (valued at only four lost sales) to the Hyundai Genesis sedan's 70% drop (as Hyundai Canada prepares to turn the Hyundai Genesis into the Genesis G80), large cars tanked in September.

And with across-the-board declines came a new segment leader.

Despite its own 12% drop, the Nissan Maxima shot to the top of the class because the declines reported by top-selling rivals were worse.

The Chevrolet Impala and Dodge Charger, both of which outsold the Maxima a year ago, tumbled 43% and 28%, respectively, carving out a space for the Nissan. 

Maxima sales were nevertheless down 55% compared with September 2010. September 2016 sales, meanwhile, fell to a seven-month low.

For Canadian purposes - Hyundai USA doesn't yet breakdown sales figures for the sedan and much less costly coupe - the Genesis will now be shown with both these volume brands, with which Hyundai is a direct competitor, and midsize luxury cars, with which the Genesis competes.
